안녕하세요 보스턴 임박사입니다.

일본은 세계 3대 헬스케어 산업을 보유한 국가로서 ICH (International Conference on Harmonization)을 만든 그룹 중 USA, EU와 더불어 중요한 국가입니다. 바이오제약산업의 연수도 300년이 넘는 업력을 자랑하고 동경대학교, 교토대학교 등 유수의 연구중심대학에서 글로벌 선도적인 연구를 수행하고 있고 결과를 내고 있죠. 하지만 아직 벤처 생태계가 성장하지 못하는 문화적, 정책적 이유로 매우 서서히 혁신을 이루는 경향을 가지고 있습니다.

이러는 가운데 미국과 일본을 연결하는 Cross-Border VC인 Remiges Ventures는 Mitsui & Co의 투자본부에서 13년간 일한 稲葉 太郎 (이나바 타로)에 의해 2014년에 설립되었습니다.

첫번째 펀드는 2014년 6월에 Sumitomo Dainippon Pharma ($30 Milllion), Taiho Pharmaceutical (30 Million)과 보스턴의 1Globe Capital LLC로 부터 펀드를 받아 설립을 했고 2017년에 UTokyo Innovation Platform (UTokyo IPC)의 전략적 신규투자를 통해 총 $80 Million의 펀드를 결성하였습니다.

그 후 2021년 4월에 2호 펀드 ($95 Million)을 결성하였습니다.

2호 펀드에는 Taiho Pharmaceutical, 1Globe Capital, LLC와 함께 EA Pharma (Tokyo, Japan)과 Senju Pharmaceutical (Osaka, Japan)이 참여하였습니다.

특징적인 것은 RDiscovery라는 Venture Creation Incubator를 만든 것입니다. RDiscovery는 Remiges Ventures의 wholly-owned subsidiary이고 일본대학의 연구결과를 상용화 가능한 기술 플랫폼으로 만들고 회사를 설립하며 투자를 유치하는 역할을 합니다.

RDiscovery는 현재 1명의 VC Partner, 3명의 Scientific Advisor와 3명의 연구원으로 구성되어 있습니다. 이 중 세명의 연구원은 주로 DMPK와 Non-clinical research를 주로 하게 됩니다.

교토대학교 사토시 고조 교수팀이 Scientific Reports (May 25th, 2021)에 보고한 기술로서 mtDNA mutations를 치료할 수 있는 cell-based therapy를 개발하는 플랫폼입니다. 논문은 아래에 있습니다.

RDiscovery에서 steal-mode로 개발하고 있는 회사들이 몇개 있을 것 같습니다. Remiges Portfolio 회사들은 일본 뿐만 아니라 미국, 프랑스, 캐나다, 이스라엘 등의 회사들도 투자하고 있습니다.

가장 최근의 기사로는 프랑스의 스타트업 기술을 Taiho Pharmaceutical이 option agreement를 체결한 계약이 있습니다.

일본의 경우에는 글로벌 규모의 일본 제약기업들이 많이 있기 때문에 해외 스타트업에 투자한 후 일본 제약기업에 M&A 시키는 식의 투자형태를 많이 갖습니다.
