한국에서 한달간 안식년을 보내는 중 7월 중순에 뜻깊은 일을 했습니다. 연세대학교 글로벌캠퍼스에 있는 K-NIBRT 사업단에서 60여명의 아시아, 아프리카, 유럽 등 여러나라에서 온 연수생들을 대상으로 오픈톡이라는 프리젠테이션을 한 것입니다. 이것에 대해서 기사가 났습니다.

모더나·연세대 K-NIBRT 사업단 “mRNA 응용 방향 공유” – 뉴시스 송연주 기자 7/11/2024

[서울=뉴시스]송연주 기자 = 글로벌 제약바이오 기업 모더나는 연세대학교 K-NIBRT 사업단(한국형 바이오공정인력양성센터)과 지난 10일 K-NIBRT 바이오공정 교육생을 대상으로 ‘mRNA 오픈톡’ 세션을 열고 mRNA (메신저 리보핵산) 기술의 의학 응용 방향성을 공유했다고 11일 밝혔다.

연사로 나선 모더나 글로벌 공정 화학 부문 임진수 박사는 ‘불가능을 넘어선 여정’이란 주제로 팬데믹 이전의 mRNA 연구개발부터 코로나19 대응 백신 개발 과정과 미래 의학을 바꿀 mRNA 의약품의 가능성에 중점을 뒀다. 임 박사는 2015년 모더나 본사에 유일한 한국인 과학자로 입사해, 2020년 코로나19 팬데믹 대응 mRNA 백신 개발에 참여했다.

임 박사는 10년 이상 mRNA 연구에 매진한 모더나의 플랫폼을 소개하며 mRNA 기술의 유연성은 단 65일 만에 코로나19 백신 임상시험을 가능하게 했다고 설명했다. 또 다양한 질병에 대한 mRNA 치료제를 개발하는 동시에 미래 팬데믹에 대비하고 있다고 강조했다.

임 박사는 “이번 산학협력 사례가 국내 mRNA 기술 분야 전문성을 높이고 세계 공중 보건에 기여하는 전문가 양성에 도움이 될 것”이라고 기대했다.

It was an inspirational sharing by the technical expert, Dr Jin Lim from Moderna about Moderna mRNA technology and how they have come so far climbing the mountain during the pandemic. Moderna transformed from a small company of 300 employees to a robust organization of over 5,000, meeting the pressing global demand for vaccines.

Dr Jin Lim mentioned that they couldn’t sleep during the pandemic, rushing through the vaccine development pipeline in 9 months — a process typically takes 10 years! Once again this reminds all of us that behind every challenge, there are great unsung heros working tirelessly to accelerate public health solutions.

A few days ago, Moderna Korea, represented by my esteemed colleague Dr. Jin Lim, hosted a ‘Moderna mRNA Open Talk’ session for Yonsei University Korea National Institute for Bioprocessing Research and Training (K-NIBRT).

This event provided an invaluable opportunity for K-NIBRT bioprocessing students to delve into the world of drug development through hashtag#mRNA technology and explore its potential future applications in various medical fields.

Dr. Lim eloquently shared Moderna’s decade-long dedication to mRNA platform research, emphasizing the remarkable agility of mRNA technology. Notably, this platform enabled us to initiate clinical trials for our COVID-19 vaccine in just 65 days. Today, we are leveraging the same platform to pioneer innovative mRNA therapeutics across a wide spectrum of diseases.

Dr. Lim’s insights deeply resonated with the audience: “Collaborative efforts between industry and academia, such as those between Moderna and K-NIBRT, will enhance expertise in the domestic mRNA technology field and help foster experts who will contribute to global public health.”

Such partnerships are essential for advancing scientific knowledge and improving public health. A heartfelt thank you to Yonsei University K-NIBRT, Moderna Korea, and all the participants for making this event a resounding success!
